Living with High Sensitivity (HSP) means developing strong self-care routines, such as establishing boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and spending time in nature to manage sensory overload and emotional intensity. Creating a tranquil home environment, reducing stimulation, scheduling regular breaks and alone time, getting adequate sleep, and surrounding yourself with supportive, positive people can be a lifeline for those who live with HSP. Embracing qualities like intuition and empathy while practicing self-compassion and letting go of perfectionism is vital to the health of a person living with HSP.

As a person who has HSP, I have been misunderstood for most of my life. Too often, society labels HSPs as “too sensitive,” or “overly emotional,” not recognizing the profound gifts that HSPs have to offer. Some HSPs themselves avoid using the term HSP, believing it to be stigmatizing and shameful. I believe, however, that the trait is something that HSPs can be proud of. Perhaps more importantly, knowledge of the trait can empower HSPs to lead a more emotionally and mentally healthy life.
