A Transformative Journey

I have HSP and I have always known that I was different. I have been adapting my life to the trait without knowing it all my life. I have obtained multiple degrees in Psychology to try and figure out what it was that made me so different. Learning that I have HSP and how to manage it has changed my entire life. I can help others with HSP learn how to manage their own lives so that they, too, can thrive with this trait.

"Finding HSP Warrior has been life-changing. I finally feel understood and equipped to thrive as a Highly Sensitive Person."

Tips to Help You THRIVE with High Sensitivity

To manage overstimulation, it's helpful to use both immediate coping strategies and long-term preventive measures. Taking action when you first feel overwhelmed can help you regulate your nervous system and prevent the situation from worsening.

Explore our Coping Strategies

Immediate relief strategies

When feeling overwhelmed by excessive sensory input, use these techniques to calm down:

  • Remove yourself from the situation by stepping away from the source of stimulation.
  • Focus on deep breathing to activate your parasympathetic nervous system and counteract stress. Techniques like box breathing can be helpful.
  • Use grounding techniques to redirect your attention and connect with the present moment through your five senses.
  • Apply gentle pressure using a weighted blanket, hug, or rocking to find comfort and calm.
  • Limit immediate sensory input by using noise-canceling headphones, dimming lights, or turning off devices.

Long-term prevention strategies

Regularly incorporating these habits can increase your tolerance for stimulation and reduce the frequency of feeling overwhelmed.

Identify and avoid triggers

  • Keep a log to identify patterns in what makes you feel overstimulated.
  • Avoid trigger situations by planning ahead, like shopping during off-peak hours.
  • Create an "escape plan" for social events if you need a break.

Build a healthy routine

  • Schedule regular sensory breaks throughout the day.
  • Prioritize sleep and hydration as fatigue can lower your tolerance for stimulation.
  • Engage in regular physical activity like walking or yoga to reduce stress.
  • Maintain a calm environment at home or work with soft lighting and reduced clutter.

Develop coping tools

  • Create a portable sensory kit with items that help you self-soothe.
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation to build awareness and regulate your response to stimulation.
  • Set firm boundaries and learn to say "no" to avoid exceeding your stimulation threshold.
  • Get professional guidance from a therapist if overstimulation significantly impacts your life.
